Buckle Up

Fastening your safety belt should be as automatic as turning on the ignition. Buckle up every time you drive. Before you realize it, this will become an automatic reflex when you get into the car, and this simple habit may extend your life. In New Jersey, as in all other states, safety belt use is mandatory.

Who Must be Secured?

  • All front-seat occupants
  • Children under 18 months of age must be buckled into an approved child car seat, regardless of their position in a vehicle
  • All children under the age of five must be in an approved child car seat if they ride in the front seat
  • As back-seat passengers, children under five years of age may use regular safety belts, but must be buckled up
